Pop video analysis 3 - One Direction 'What Makes You Beautiful'

Analysis of video:

·         Lighting:
By where it is set the lighting that is used is natural light which is in the day so you can see the group and the location more than what you would at night. Near the end of the video is when we start to see a change in lighting as we see shots where we can see the sun is setting or set, and that it is night. This almost represents that the video could be a record of the day.

·         Costume
The costumes used in this video really tie the boys together as a boy band. They look like one not just sound like one. The colours used are all similar on each of the members which links them together. The girls that are seen within the video are wearing typical summer/ beach wear dress.

·         Location
The location of this video is set on a beach, in my opinion, to almost represent a ‘summer love’ the sort seen in the musical ‘Grease’. So it creates that love moment between two people and a beach can be seen as a romantic place. And seeing that its only them that’s on the because reinforces that it’s just them and no one else.

·        Editing
The editing seen in this video doesn’t consist of continuous cutting but in fact a continuous use of fades. There are cuts seen throughout but the majority of the video is pieced together by the faces used. The use of the fades almost work better in this video because it’s still not really noticeable to the viewers but it works more in this video due to the lovey mood and atmosphere that’s created by it and other factors. At certain points throughout the video you almost see shot's overlayed so that you can see both at the same time, by doing this it reinforces the atmosphere and shows that there is a clear reason why this has been done.

·         Cinematography/ mise en scene
The video starts by some high angled extreme long shots which helps to set the scene so the viewers are introduced to the location. Throughout the video there is a range of shots and movements used but the most popular shots used are long, mid, mid close ups and close ups to create a bond and relationship between the boys and the viewers watching it. These shots are accompanied by a variety of high and low angles as well to help show the location within the shots as well. The shots and angles also help to make that ‘summer love’ type effect that I have spoken about previously in the analysis of location. Also, throughout the video there are a range of camera movements such as track out and crab, in addition to this there are parts that are slow motion which helps build up that fun atmosphere. A fun, summer feeling is created throughout the video by all of these factors coming together to create a successful boy band music video which not only girls will like but also a selection of boys would like too.
