Pop video analysis 3 - One Direction 'What Makes You Beautiful'
Analysis of video:
· Lighting:
By where it is set the lighting that is used is natural light which is in the day so you can see the group and the location more than what you would at night. Near the end of the video is when we start to see a change in lighting as we see shots where we can see the sun is setting or set, and that it is night. This almost represents that the video could be a record of the day.
· Costume
The costumes used in this video really tie the boys together as a boy band. They look like one not just sound like one. The colours used are all similar on each of the members which links them together. The girls that are seen within the video are wearing typical summer/ beach wear dress.
· Location
The location of this video is set on a beach, in my opinion, to almost represent a ‘summer love’ the sort seen in the musical ‘Grease’. So it creates that love moment between two people and a beach can be seen as a romantic place. And seeing that its only them that’s on the because reinforces that it’s just them and no one else.
· Editing
The editing seen in this video doesn’t consist of continuous cutting but in fact a continuous use of fades. There are cuts seen throughout but the majority of the video is pieced together by the faces used. The use of the fades almost work better in this video because it’s still not really noticeable to the viewers but it works more in this video due to the lovey mood and atmosphere that’s created by it and other factors. At certain points throughout the video you almost see shot's overlayed so that you can see both at the same time, by doing this it reinforces the atmosphere and shows that there is a clear reason why this has been done.
· Cinematography/ mise en scene
The video starts by some high angled extreme long shots which helps to set the scene so the viewers are introduced to the location. Throughout the video there is a range of shots and movements used but the most popular shots used are long, mid, mid close ups and close ups to create a bond and relationship between the boys and the viewers watching it. These shots are accompanied by a variety of high and low angles as well to help show the location within the shots as well. The shots and angles also help to make that ‘summer love’ type effect that I have spoken about previously in the analysis of location. Also, throughout the video there are a range of camera movements such as track out and crab, in addition to this there are parts that are slow motion which helps build up that fun atmosphere. A fun, summer feeling is created throughout the video by all of these factors coming together to create a successful boy band music video which not only girls will like but also a selection of boys would like too.
Brief
The brief for this task is to make a promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options:
- A website homepage for the band
- A digipak for the album's release
- A magazine advertisement for the digipak

'In The Sun' Remake
As a class we had to recreate the music video to 'In The Sun' by She and Him. We each were involved with filming and directing certain shots and then with editing all of them together.
Here is the original video of 'In The Sun' by She and Him:

Reflection:
What did we do when filming that made it easier to edit and more professional?

Reflection:
What did we do when filming that made it easier to edit and more professional?
- Everyone was constantly referring back to their storyboards when filming and directing so that they could get the shot exactly right when shooting, that the cast needed and the specific props and equipment was there.
- The communication between the whole class made it easier to work as we all listened to one another, no one mucked about. When someone said "Quiet on set", everyone was quiet. This allowed the filming and overall process to run smoothly.
- Shots were shot multiple times so that there was a variety that we could choose from and decide what to use, depending on which one was better.
- Sophie and Dayna really kept the group on track by making sure everyone knew what they were doing and that if anyone needed help they could step up to help them. This made editing easier when it came to it as the shots were more accurate due to their advice and help, which in turn made it easier to put into the sequence.
- On a few shots, the people who were filming and directing didn't really pay attention to certain aspects on the storyboard such as the camera movement or what actually happens in the shot. So when it came to filming my partner and I had to figure out which was which by a process of elimination.
- When editing, my partner and I noticed that a few shots were missing so we had to use parts of other/ previous shots to put in the place of the ones that was meant to be there.
- We could have had more time editing if kept to schedule and timing so that we didn't run over and have to shoot on another day.
- If, when filming Sophie (playing the main character) was able to concentrate on lip syncing so it would have been easier to match up the clips to the lyrics as on certain shots it looks unprofessional and almost takes away a certain aspect from the piece.
- We all worked really well together, people helped those who needed it and on the spot people volunteered to step in as either director or filming when needed to.
- When preparing for shooting the video, everyone really took charge of what they needed to so that it helped get everything organised efficiently.
- Sophie and Dayna really helped the whole shooting process run easily and smoothly so that there was not stresses or negativity in the group. Everyone was kept happy and everyone really work well as a team.
- The process itself really taught us a lot about keeping to timing, concentrating on what exactly needs to be shot and giving us the experience of shooting a music video.
- Sophie had practised lip syncing so that when it came to editing and making the final product it looked more professional the her lips matched the lyrics.
- Certain people in shots had acted more so it built up more of the jolly atmosphere that we see in the original video.
- When preparing for the shoot, we focused more when learning the timing in the dances so that when it came to the shoot, we were more prepared and knew exactly what happened at what part of the song.
- It would have been better if we checked that every single shot was shot correctly so that when we were editing certain shots weren't missing or didn't match the original video.
